Clutter to Cozy: Shoe Rack DIY

Transform Your Space with a Simple DIY: Conceal an Ugly Shoe Stand with Stick-On Curtain Rails

I was tired of looking at an unsightly shoe stand cluttering my entryway. I've been rattling my brain for two years now on how to achieve a more polished and organized look without breaking the bank. If your own shoe rack woes are similar, this DIY project is perfect for you. With just a few supplies and a bit of creativity, you can add curtains to conceal your shoe stand using stick-on curtain rails. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transform your space effortlessly.

Materials You’ll Need:

Step 1: Measure Your Space

The first step in any successful DIY project is accurate measurement. Measure the height and width of the area you want to cover. This will help you determine the length of the curtain rails and the size of the curtains you need. Make sure to check the height at which you want your curtains to drop at. For example, the height from the floor to where my curtain track is mounted is 26", but my curtains are only 24" long. This is because I wanted to maintain another layer of storage on the floor, where I could slip in footwear beneath the curtains.

Step 2: Choose Your Curtains

Select curtains or fabric that match your home decor. Whether you prefer a bold pattern, a solid color, or a sheer material, ensure the curtains are long enough to cover the shoe stand completely. If you're feeling particularly creative, consider customizing plain curtains with fabric paint or embellishments. I decided to keep it simple with beige striped curtains since the countertop and other adjacent spaces are doing a lot.

Step 3: Clean the Area

For the stick-on curtain rails to adhere properly, the surface needs to be clean and dry. Use a mild cleaner to wipe down the area where you’ll be applying the rails. I also applied Terrazo contact paper to the top surface, so I cleaned the top surface as well. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 4: Apply the Contact Paper

I haven't been a fan of the wood for a while now, so I've been looking for the right contact paper to use for this project. II chanced upon this Terrazo pattern, which is PERFECT! With its subtle dots of color against a white background, it definitely lightens the space. Make sure to screw off the top to easily apply the contact paper.

I used a peel and stick contact paper which was simple to use, almost like wrapping a book. Always make sure the contact paper is wider than the surface you plan to cover. The extra width can be forgiving when we don't paste perfectly straight and helps cover the side edges as well. If you're using a pattern that needs to be aligned, start by sticking done one edge and make your way across and then down. Use a credit card to smooth out any air bubbles that arise from the pasting process.

Step 5: Install the Stick-On Curtain Rails

Stick-on curtain rails are a fantastic solution for renters or anyone who prefers not to drill holes in their walls. If you want the rails to match the rest of your rack, now is the time to spray paint them with the color of your choice and seal it before proceeding. Otherwise, peel off the backing and carefully press the rails into place according to your measurements. Use a level to ensure they are straight if needed. Press firmly to ensure the adhesive sticks well.

Note: I should add that the adhesive on the rails were not great, so I ended up removing the adhesive sticker provided and instead used permanent glue (like E6000) to mount my track.

Step 6: Attach the Curtains

Once the rails are securely in place, it’s time to hang your curtains. Thread the hooks through each pleat of the curtain and then thread the hooks onto the gliders. You'll next need to slide each of the gliders onto the stick-on rails. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the curtains hang evenly and cover the shoe stand completely.

Step 7: Final Touches

Take a step back and admire your work. Make any final adjustments to the curtains to ensure they drape nicely and cover the shoe stand entirely. If your curtains are too long, you can easily hem them with fabric tape or by sewing a quick seam.

With just a few simple steps, you can conceal an unsightly shoe stand and elevate the look of your home. This DIY project is perfect for anyone looking to add a touch of style and organization without making permanent changes. So grab your materials, follow this guide, and transform your space today! Not only will you enjoy a more polished look, but you’ll also gain a sense of accomplishment from completing a creative project. Happy DIY-ing!
